What is Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA)?
Share
Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a naturally occurring compound found in the human body. It plays a crucial role in energy production by helping enzymes convert nutrients into energy. It also possesses antioxidant properties, which can help neutralize harmful free radicals that will cause cell damage. ALA is produced in small amounts in our body, and can also be obtained from various food source such as red meat, carrots, spinach and potato. Since they only appear in trace amount, supplements are a great choice to obtain sufficient level of ALA.
ALA may alleviate and relief nerve pain. It is particularly effective in people with diabetes. Symptoms such as burning, pain and numbness can be relieved by ALA. Some studies also proved its potential to lower total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL or “bad”) cholesterol levels. There are also some individuals using it for weight loss by enhancing the ability of calorie burning. People with diabetes often use ALA to help control blood sugar levels and support complications of diabetes.
ALA is generally considered safe when taken in appropriate doses. Some common side effects include nausea, rash and low blood sugar. ALA supplements are not commonly used in Hong Kong. ALA is also difficult to absorb with studies suggesting only 30%-40% of the oral dose of an ALA supplement can be effectively absorbed. With the use of liposomal technology, supplements like LipoFast can enhance absorption, making your body easier to absorb these supplements, rendering them effective.
