We all know sleep is essential for overall health and well-being. We have also covered some tips on how to get a better sleep at night. Do you know there are still around 30% of all adults struggle to get good sleep and experiences sleeping disturbances? If you have tried all other methods including behaviour changes, you should definitely look into sleep support supplements as there are well proven products in our market waiting for you.
Melatonin
Melatonin, a hormone released by the brain in response to darkness, plays a crucial role in our sleep-wake cycle. It helps prepare our bodies for rest. There are multiple strengths in the market ranging from 1mg to 10mg. Usually the bigger the dose, the better the efficacy, but this does not work for melatonin as studies have found out it is best used with other supplements and not on its own. The effect of melatonin only supplements can only provide you with a slightly faster sleep onset and longer sleep duration.
Magnesium Bisglycinate
Also known as magnesium glycinate, it is an essential mineral that plays a role in muscle relaxation and neurotransmitter functionality. It may help calm the nervous system, reduce anxiety, and promote a better sleep. It works synergistically to support GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) activity, which has a calming effect and aids sleep.
GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid)
GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that helps regulate brain activity. Supplements containing GABA are often marketed for relaxation and improved sleep.
Valerian, Chamomile, Passion Flower and California Poppy
These are herbal remedies known for calming properties and sedative effects. While more studies are needed, some individuals find them helpful for managing stress and sleep.
Probiotics
Specific probiotics combination, such as L. rhamnosus LR06, L. plantarum LP01, L. fermentum LF16 and B. longum 04 are one of the proven formulas for better sleep. Multiple studies shown that after taking the this unique combination for 6 weeks, there is a marked decrease in depress mood, fatigue and anger observed. An improvement in sleep quality was also reported. However, not all probiotics demonstrated the same result.
Supplements are not necessary for a better sleep, but if you are experiencing such issues and cannot be resolved otherwise, supplements are a good, safe and natural way for sleep support. The consequences of constant poor sleeping quality and the lack of sufficient sleep is detrimental to health and should be avoided at all cost. Specific medications can be prescribed and dispensed by professionals, but these should be used if other methods, such as supplements, are insufficient to solve the issue.
