The Consumer Council recently released a report on mosquito repelling products and tested products containing various ingredients. Products with 20% IR3535, 25% DEET, 20% picaridin and PMD are discovered to be highly effective and some of these products are awarded with complete 5-star recommendations. On the other hand, some mosquito repelling products are even found to attract mosquitoes and are not recommended for use.
The Council also highlighted the risks of using DEET and picaridin. High concentration and prolonged exposure to DEET may result in allergic reactions and skin irritations. Picaridin may cause fewer allergic reactions but will also irritate the eyes. These products shall not be used on kids due to safety concerns. Hong Kong Department of Health suggested DEET with 10% or higher concentration shall not be used on kids, and should avoid using DEET at all costs for infants under 6 months of age.
20% IR3535 is endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and are proven to be highly effective and also received a complete 5 star review from the Consumer Council. 20% IR3535 exhibits 84% mosquito-repellent ability even after 4 hours of use. According to a document released by the Government of Maine USA, 15% IR3535 is already equivalent to the efficacy of 30% DEET.

Mosquito repellents are vital in the summer as we travel outdoors. Apply these products 15-30 minutes after the use of sunscreen for better results. Moreover, wearing long sleeves and light-coloured clothing will also provide additional benefits.
